King Robert Bruce And The Spider

King Robert Bruce And The Spider

King Robert Bruce was the ruler of Scotland. Once, the King of England attacked his kingdom and defeated him in a war. King Bruce had to flee from the battle-field to save his life. So, his kingdom fell into the hands of the King of England.

King Bruce took shelter in a cave in a forest. There, gathering his forces, he led his army against the King of England. But he lost the battle again. In order to free his kingdom, he attacked him again and again. But each time, he had to face a defeat. Finally, he became so sad and disheartened that he gave up the fight altogether.

The time rolled by, one day, King Bruce was sitting in his cave in a very sad mood. Suddenly, his eyes fell on a spider. It was trying to climb the wall and reach its web.
After climbing a little, it fell to the ground. This happened a number of times. Yet, the spider did not give up its fresh attempts.

King Bruce was watching it intently. When, it fell to the ground for the sixteenth time, he wondered, “What will it do now? It has fallen down sixteen times. Surely, it will give up trying now.” But to his surprise, it began to climb the wall again. And this time, it was able to reach its web. Seeing this, King Bruce thought, “If a small spider did not lose heart, why should I?” And gathering his forces once again, he led another attack against England. His army fought hard. He won the battle and freed his country.

Moral: "Never be disheartened by failure.Try and try again until you succeed."
