The Thirsty Crow : Short Moral Stories For Kids

The Thirsty Crow

Once a crow was flying about in search of food. He flew for a long time but couldn’t find any. He was tired now and wanted to take a rest. So, he perched on the branch of a tree.

As it was very hot, the crow felt thirsty. He looked about for water but could not find a sign of it anywhere.

So, he started to fly again in search of water. Suddenly, the crow saw a pitcher. He flew to it and sat on its brim.

The crow looked inside the pitcher and spotted a little water at its bottom. He felt relieved and put his beak into it in order to quench his thirst. As the water was much too low, the crow’s beak did not reach it. He was very disappointed indeed. The thirsty crow muttered to himself, if only I were able to raise the level of the water in the pitcher, I could drink it”.

The crow scratched his brain to find a way. Suddenly, he hit out an idea. He began to look around, searching for something on the ground.

He saw a few pebbles littered around him. He picked up a pebble in his beak, flew to the pitcher and dropped the pebble into it. In this way, he kept putting pebbles into the pitcher for quite some time.

The thirsty crow was delighted to see that the level of water had risen a little higher. The crow felt encouraged. He found his plan working successfully. He was sure that the water would rise up to the neck of the pitcher in a short time.

So, the crow picked up some more pebbles from the ground and dropped them into the pitcher one by one. The level of the water inside the pitcher also kept rising. Before long, the water rose to the mouth of the pitcher. The crow’s eyes sparkled with joy. His hard labour had borne fruit. He drank water to his heart’s content. Then, he flew onto the tree and sat down to rest there.

Moral : "Where there is a will, there is a way".
